Fame

I'm a counterculture hero! Well, kind of.

So the year before last I made up fake University Housing letterhead and announced that the 2nd floor of Carson dorm was now the official skyclad hall. I lived on the 5th floor and had some friends on the 2nd who I wished to josh.

The flyers I hung up (Xeroxes of a (fake) memo from Housing to the RA) disappeared in two days. I originally figured that the administration or the janitors trashed 'em, but later saw enough hanging up in people's rooms to understand that kids were taking them as souvenirs.

Very few people knew I was responsible. If anyone asked me right out if I did it, I 'fessed up. Otherwise, I just let the rumors fly. I was known mostly for being the person in 5-D who wanted people to be quieter on school nights, so only a few friends suspected me.

Last year I lived on 2nd floor Carson - a coincidence; it was the only floor with a female quiet wing. My roommate was French, spending one year here.

One night, the subject of rumors and disinformation came up. I had just made a crappy and badly designed sign, carefully mimicking the layout and typeface of the official crappy and badly-designed signs, that said something like

"NO PIANO PLAYING AFTER MIDNIGHT, I'M TRYING TO SLEEP DAMMIT."

Obviously, I'm paraphrasing. It looked much more official.

My room is lovely, but right over the lounge. For some reason, Asian students like to play very loud piano at 3 am. It's always Asian students, and it's never one who plays well. Just very loud scales, or, if I have somehow offended God that day, "Heart and Soul."

Anyway, I finally explained to Frédérique through the language barrier that I had made this sign (she thought I had stolen it -- points for accurate design). She told me that when she told groups of people where she was living, like as not someone would say,

"Oh, the NUDE floor!"

and then explain to her about the notice last year. She had even been shown one of the Xeroxes. It had looked like a third or fourth generation copy. I pulled up the original on my computer, in color. She was very impressed. I think I got about 15% cooler in her eyes.

So I'm anonymously famous now. I guess that's pretty neat.

I will not deny that such a thing would be fun. I wish I had such flair.
