The Complete Petey, Part Thirteen

April 1971 - October 1971

Petey comic for April 1971

April, 1971 - With only the contact information changed (to include ZIP), it's a duplicate of October 1968.

Petey comic for June 1971

June, 1971 - October 1967. Readers must have become concerned about Petey's absence.

Petey comic for July 1971

July, 1971 - A return to new comics, as well as to the early, carefully detailed drawing style. Either the artist took a very restful vacation, or he died or went AWOL and this comic was found under a desk.

What a beautiful rendering of Petey to close on, though. Petey is the picture of contentment, glancing over at his rabbit meat and answering a rabbit meat question printed in his rabbit meat-loving community's newspaper. Rabbit meat fills his past, his future, and his stomach.

In Memoriam [2001-07-14 00:46:02] Pop
Petey, Petey, we hardly knew ye. Your candle flickered all too briefly, but you left the world a better place than you found it. With fewer rabbits, anyway.
aw. [2001-07-14 01:42:14] staniel
"fixed" for "cooked" gives away the Southern origins of the Pel-Freez company.
those kind of gimmicks are always better if the goofy response isn't the ONLY response. there is no seven-letter word for charcoal BBQ'd rabbit, at least, not in English. perhaps among the rabbit-hunting natives of Charcoal Island, yes. "what's a six-letter word for a piece of sharp cheddar cheese which has been irradiated and painted blue?"
aniconic imagery [2001-07-14 03:20:00] Lou Duchez
Petey, like the Buddha, has achieved Enlightenment, and so his adherents render him only indirectly as of the last panel. It's actually a close-up of Petey walking home from the store with a box under his arm.

Hey, when I look closely at that box, I would swear I see human faces in the meat. Almost dead-center on the platter, it looks like G. Gordon Liddy.
"fixed" [2001-07-14 04:14:31] König Prüß, GfbAEV
It may be that the Pel-Freez motivational psychologists have made an effort to create "rabbit junkies" who will need a daily "fix" of delicious rabbit meat. Gestalt of rabbit! I was 8-years-old before I could see the "Man in the Moon!" Up 'til then, I saw...a...rabbit!
If you direct your attention to the box in the last panel [2001-07-14 05:17:54] Danielle
You'll notice that farm-raised is no longer in quotation marks. What happened? Did that wonderful Pel-Freez upgrade their factory conditions and consider it now a real "farm"? Too bad it didn't happen till the end of the Petey era, though. They could've re-run the whole series, taking away the "farm-raised" and replacing it with farm-raised. I felt very bitter that they reran those two panels..What a ripoff. To add the zip code. Sellouts.
Rabbit Farm [2001-07-14 05:28:52] König Prüß, GfbAEV
Yeah, I've been trying to imagine what a rabbit farm looks like. I visualize rows of strange plants with rabbits growing on them. These rabbits seem much more appetizing than the factory-assembled rabbits, or the rabbits available in kit-form. Just losing the quotes seems much less suspicious.
"tender young rabbit" [2001-07-14 05:57:51] Lou Duchez
Man, that box is an eye-opener. I'm glad we finally got to see one up close.

"Tender young rabbit". Jesus, what consumer base were they courting? The Tasmanian Devil?

rabbit in the moon [2001-07-15 10:55:01] Lou Duchez
I'm looking at pictures of the moon, and I can't see a rabbit in there. Tips as to orientation and key rabbit part locations?
Pel-Freez [2001-07-15 11:00:44] Casey
I am unsure if this has been discussed in previous commentaries, but I found a couple of things to be consistent and usual in the realm of Petey. Pel-Freez Rabbit Meat, Inc. sells "farm-raised" rabbit meat, always in quotes. I know this is more of a spinnwebe type complaint, but nevertheless, I find it odd that there are always quotes containing the words "farm-raised". I also found fascination in the "new tray pack". Even after five or six years, the tray pack is always new. I wouldn't say Crystal Pepsi is new today, so how can they say their six-year-old tray pack is new?
Rabbit in the moon [2001-07-15 15:17:48] Jonas
The Japanese hold (maybe "held" now) that the man-in-the-moon/crab/etc is a rabbit making rice cakes: the crab's top pincer is the rabbit's ears, while the pincer on the right side of the moon is the rabbit's paws making the rice cakes. The moon's waning right now, but when it waxes again it's pretty easy to see, and I think is a lot more interesting than a boring old crab (even though I'm a Cancer).
astro-bunnies [2001-07-15 15:35:23] Lou Duchez
(A bottle of Winking Lizard sauce to the person who can identify a comedy show in which astro-bunnies were sent into space.)

Okay, let's look at Exhibit A:

http://www.netaxs.com/~mhmyers/cdjpgs/eclfull.jpg

Um, okay. So the rabbit is ... um ... running at full speed to the left, bashing his skull into the border of the moon at about the 8:45 position? Or ... ?

If the rabbit is a moon symbol, then Petey is the force that monthly consumes the moon. It further follows that Patty gives birth to the moon every month. The cosmic ballet ... continues.
heh [2001-07-15 16:22:19] staniel
does anyone want to trade seats?
Contest [2001-07-15 18:14:49] Sean

Moon Rabbit [2001-07-15 19:02:24] König Prüß, GfbAEV
If you look at the Full Moon one clear night, there seems to be a rabbit running up the left side of the disk, the ears extend across the eyes of the Man in the Moon. Phew! I'm glad that the Petey Contest goes thru the week 'cuz I yam soooo blasted this weekend; mostly tired and drunk on cheap rotgut whiskey, but I got a new music player, so I'm enjoying all of my old music just like a virgin for the very first time!
expert witness [2001-07-15 19:10:29] Lou Duchez
We need Erich von Däniken to sort all this out. He'd be perfect for drawing wiggly lines on the moon to prove that it contains rabbits, crabs, and John Madden.
Rabbits and crabs [2001-07-15 20:07:59] Jonas
Here's the rabbit making rice cakes, and here's the crab. No man though; I, for the life of me, haven't never been able to see a face.
Rabbit in the Moon [2001-07-16 05:13:35] Riff
Rabbit in the Moon - a very good techno band.
lunar Rorschach test [2001-07-16 06:36:19] Lou Duchez
Here's some more: a rabbit, man, and another rabbit.
Yep. [2001-07-16 08:20:35] Clef
Rabbit in the Moon are an excellent band. I saw them live and my shoes exploded because they blew my fucking socks off.

Also, I am all over this contest. Time to practice drawing Petey!
They still exist! [2003-09-26 22:03:00] Amanda Halvorson
This company is still slaughtering rabbits for meat today! I wonder how many animals they've murdered now. Who eats rabbit anyway? I mean, owls and wolves do, but do people actually eat rabbit? Or are people buying this stuff to feed their pet snakes?
